My First Tournament

After much googleing and a few phone calls, I have found a small local poker tournament that plays at the beginning part of next week. The buy in is £20 (approximately $40) and I have to become a member of the venue which is £5 (or $10). That seems like quite a high rake but it is the membership for the year so I'm fine with that.

I am told that anything between 30 and 45 players will enter. I have played similar tournaments online but not live. The only other thing to note is the blind structure. They start at 15/30 then go up to 30/60 etc. They go up every half an hour and we all start with 7000 chips. Now to me this seems extremely deep stacked. In fact if there is 45 people with 9 to a table then it sounds to me like I could fold for days!

The £20 buy in with the £5 membership fee is well above my poker bankroll at the moment, so I would prefer maybe a £5 buy in, but because I live in the middle of nowhere I guess I can stretch to this as it's still more about getting experience and knowledge right now than money. Also this is one of Aprils goals so I'm entering.

To be honest, I'm not expecting to go in there and rip the room to pieces. I would just like to learn something about these kind of games and get some experience for the future. However, with that said, it would be nice to get into the top 7 and therefore cash.

I think I am going to very tight for the first hour or so and try and get the measure of a few people. If you don't know who the sucker is, it is you, so I will work out who the suckers are and who I should avoid before I do anything fancy. When the moment is right I will strike with the best hands and not before.

Other than that I don't really have a game plan and was hoping that a few readers could throw a few tips my way.

u will do better than u think.

Play tight until about half the people have gone then start playing aggresive and stealing blinds. push the action when u get near the final table.

Good luck in your first tourny.. I play a similar tournament at a working mans club in my town..sounds very similar to your place.. £5 membership for year etc..
£10 buy in with £10 re-buy..
As previous advice,I would certainly play tight with that amount of chips..
You'll probably find there are a few drinkers there and prob many people not taking it as seriously as yourself so take advantage of this..
If you get into trouble or end up card dead you'll need to start making a move..(for me normally a stake of 8x the BigBlind)

Anyway look forward to hearing how you done.

Thanks for the comments and advice guys.

The venue is a working mans club so I think you might be right that there will be a few drinkers. The £5 is membership for the club and goes towards the cheap drinks! I have learned my lesson about alcohol and poker so I will try to spot them out and encourage them to make risks that they shouldn't.

So with the general advise being to play tight early on I will follow it and make the best of any early situations that come my way.
